Place

From Wikipedia:
A place is a location in space. Place may refer to:
* Place (United States Census Bureau), defined as any concentration of population
* Place identity, a group of ideas concerning significance and meanings that particular places have for their inhabitants and users
* Sense of place, a phenomenon in which people strongly identify with a particular geographical area or location

Place may also be:
* "Locus", the Latin word for place
* An individual's place in society, or social position
* A street-type designation, for a cul-de-sac
* Part of the name of a public space such as a town square, plaza or piazza

What defines a place? Is it the people who live there? The walls that are built, the lines that are drawn? Is it the vegetation that is indigenous to that particular area? Is it the climate? The land formations? It's all of these things. It's what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel. A place is an experience. And experiences in the suburbs are different from anywhere else because the place is unique. Not that each suburb is unique, but that suburbs as a whole are unique in their homogeneity. They are a completely human creation, with no reference at all to existing conditions.
Now I feel like I'm rambling. Where do I want to go with this? How does writing stories about different suburban experiences constitute an architecture thesis?

  1. You are describing a place with the eye of an architect. You will notice things that most people ignore in passing. This is important because most of us (especially architects) condemn the suburbs. But you still see value in it and that's not a bad thing.
